Dehradun, 04 July. Two-time MLA from Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar dsitrict, Puskar Dhami who surprised everyone and outpaced other heavyweights for the top job in the state, has tough time ahead to prove his mettle in a very short span of time. The 45 leader whom the saffron party was named as next Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on Saturday has been given weightage over number of experienced heavyweights. The 45-year-old leader is likely to take reins of the state as the 11th Chief Minister replacing Tirath Singh Rawat this evening.
Dhami is the youngest leader to hold the chair of CM in the history of this 21-year-old Himalayan state. By bringing Dhami’s name forward, the saffron party has tried to strike a balance between Thakur vs Brahmin and Garhwal vs Kumaun factor in Uttarakhand politics.
A party source said that while outgoing Chief Minister Tirath Rawat and BJP state president Madan Kaushik represent Garhwal. With Garhwal having two key posts in its kitty, the BJP has chosen a leader from Kumaun region to strike a balance between the two competing regions. ”Kaushik is a Brahmin leader while Dhami is a Thakur. The purpose of handing over the reins of the state to Dhami is aimed at appeasing the Thakurs, who are considered to be the largest electorate group in the state.
Outgoing CM Rawat had proposed Dhami’s name in the BJP Legislature Party meeting Saturday afternoon. Kaushik supported the motion and the ministers and legislators approved it unanimously. The swearing-in ceremony of the new CM is likely to be held today i.e. on Sunday evening.
Dhami said that “I know that I have less time but I want to assure everyone that I will do everything possible to work for the welfare of the people. Our party has taken some big decisions in the last four years. And I will continue the good work of my predecessors.” He said that he has been a part of youth politics and his focus would be on youth welfare.
Political observers say the new chief minister will need to coordinate with senior party leaders to work closely with them. Many of them were also in the race for the post of CM. With no experience of working as a minister, Dhami will have to work very hard and learn the nuances of this important responsibility at the earliest. It will be a big challenge for him to adjust with the party leaders as well as the cadre in the Garhwal region.
